Less plastic locks eggs

Sharp Interpack has designed top and base inserts in the premier Cadbury’s ‘Collection’ Easter egg range that reduces plastic content on the premier size by over 19 grams or a staggering 53% reduction.

The ‘Collection’ range is sold in two sizes of egg in a distinctive reusable tin. The standard size offers a saving of 40% or a saving of nearly 11 gms of plastic.

All this means less waste to landfill.

Easter 2007 saw sales of chocolate eggs top £245 million. It is anticipated that this record will be exceeded in 2008. Cadburys alone sold some 33 million eggs last year.  At a time when retailers in conjunction with the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) have set demanding targets to design out waste in the UK by 2008 and an absolute reduction in packaging waste by 2010 it is refreshing to see Sharp having created a top and base insert in the Cadbury’s ‘Collection’ range that significantly reduces the amount of excess packaging.

Cadbury’s the world’s largest confectionery company and Sharp Interpack the UK’s leader in rigid thermoformed plastic packaging are working together for a greener environment. We collaborated closely with Cadburys to produce this packaging. It is manufactured from r-APET which in itself is a recycled material with up to 60% post consumer waste. This is a major leap forward in helping Cadburys achieve their pledge to reduce their environmental footprint through a number of measures including the reduction of packaging – we are proud to be supporting them in that initiative.

Jo Grice, Easter senior brand manager at Cadbury said

‘Expanding our range of more eco-friendly seasonal products is part of our overall Purple Goes Green environmental strategy where we have pledged to reduce our environmental footprint by 50% through a number of measures, including reducing packaging. Our new Easter egg range strikes the right balance between reducing packaging while still delivering an attractive product that consumers will enjoy giving and receiving this Easter’.
