The move away from a standard 250g punnet to a 250g elements punnet has meant 198 less truck movements or the equivalent of an Intercity train travelling 500,000 miles.
Looking at it another way Sharpak has increased punnet capacity from 24 to 27 in a crate and improved pallet utilisation by 38%.
…the UK’s No. 1 supplier of mushroom punnets knows the benefits of reducing carbon when it comes to the business but, and more importantly, the environment. Whether enhancing existing products or innovating new ones Sharpak continues to optimise on the potential offered by environmental packaging, establishing a leading position on the green agenda.
Take, for instance, Sharpak’s range of r-PP punnets. This is a natural choice for the mushroom industry containing mineral filler and significantly reducing petro chemical content by 25%. The product is a manufactured with a minimum of 50% recycled material and contains approved post consumer waste from recycled HD milk bottles.
Sharpak has an ability to combine and mix both to form and create the perfect punnet. Sharpak has drawn extensively on its material science know-how allied to its rotary thermoforming process to develop this range using mineral blend substitutes and supply chain waste offering a straightforward answer to the environmental challenge ticking all the right boxes:
* r-PP punnets reduce landfill with 50% recycled content
* use of natural mineral substitute
* reduces virgin feedstocks by 25%
* no packaging line tooling investment required
* virtually identical properties to standard PP
* proven in the marketplace
* improved crate fit
* first to use UK PCW material
* lighter trays
* produced at Sharp Interpack’s UK Yate factory winner of Best Health and Safety and Environmental Performance by UK factory
* all accreditations with Lloyds Register Quality Assurance
* ISO 9001*ISO14001*OHSAS 18001:1199

Coming at a time when leading retailers in conjunction with WRAP have set demanding targets designing out the growth in packaging waste in the UK by 2008 and an absolute reduction in packaging waste by 2010, the design is a bold and assertive example of Sharpak’s commitment to the environment.
